What is it like living abroad on your own?
Living abroad on my own can be quite lonely.
While other friends here get to have meals with their families and spend their free time with them, I have to cook and eat by myself, and I mostly spend my free time with friends around me. I think that can feel a little sad sometimes.
Another difficult part is that when I’m going through a hard time or have something I’m worried about, the only people I really can talk to are my friends. I sometimes feel envious of people who live here with their families because they have their parents and other people they can turn to when they are struggling.
I also tend to keep my worries to myself because I don’t want my parents in Korea to worry about me even more. I try to deal with things on my own instead. Another difficult part is that I don’t really feel like I have a place where I can truly settle down, whether it’s Korea or Canada.
In Canada, I’m living here as an international student, and I have to move between different university residences. At the same time, Korea doesn’t necessarily feel like home either, since I haven’t lived there for a long time. So, not having a place that truly feels like home or somewhere I can comfortably settle down has been one of the more difficult parts for me.
At the same time, living abroad on my own has also helped me gain confidence and become more independent. Through living on my own, I’ve been able to discover new sides of myself that I didn’t know before.
